Rotate Image: Quarter Turns, Any Angle, Flips and Batches

You took a photo and it opened sideways, or a scan came in slightly crooked. Drop one picture or fifty, turn them the way you need and download them again, with your pictures staying on your own computer.

Pictures are turned by your own browser and never leave your computer. Your last settings are kept on this device until you press Reset settings.

Fixing the photo that opens on its side

Many visitors arrive here with a picture that sits the wrong way round on a web page or in a document. Drop the file onto the box, click it to choose files, or paste a picture straight from the clipboard. Pictures in PNG, JPG, WebP, HEIC, GIF and AVIF are accepted, so a photo straight from a phone is fine.

The quickest route is the pair of Turn left and Turn right buttons. Under each picture there is a second pair that turns only that one, which helps when a batch holds a mix of upright and sideways shots. The settings panel then applies one rule to all of them, and every change is worked out again from the original file, so turning twice never wears the picture down.

When you are happy, download one picture, or take the whole batch as a single ZIP file.

The turn and corner choices

ChoiceWhat happens
90 degrees right, 180 degrees, 90 degrees leftPixels are moved to new places without any blending, so the picture stays as sharp as it was and only its width and height swap when needed.
No turnThe picture is left as it is, which is useful when you only want a flip or a new file type.
Any angleYou type degrees, with right as plus and left as minus. The picture is turned and the canvas grows to hold the tilted corners.

For an angle that is not a quarter turn, the Corners menu decides what fills the empty triangles. White and Black give a flat colour. See-through leaves them empty, which only works in a PNG, so choose that file type if you use it. Zoom in, no corners keeps the original frame size and enlarges the picture just enough that no empty corner shows, at the price of cutting off the edges.

Two tick boxes flip the picture left to right like a mirror, or top to bottom. They work together with any turn.

Straightening a slightly crooked scan

For a page that was scanned a little off, pick Any angle and try a small number such as 1 or 2 in the right direction. Look at the preview, then adjust. A tilted picture always takes up more room than the flat one, because the corners of the old frame stick out, so decide early whether you want colour in the corners or the zoomed version.

If the result will become a hero image or a card photo, think about the crop afterwards. Our guide on website speed for small sites explains why the final file should also be sized and compressed before it goes on a page, which is a separate step from turning it.

What happens to camera and location details

Photos from a phone carry hidden details such as the camera, the date and sometimes the place. The Photo details menu has three choices.

  • Remove them all. Nothing is kept, which is the safest choice for pictures going on a public page.
  • Keep them, but not the place. Camera and date stay, the location is dropped.
  • Keep them all. Everything is copied, with the direction marker updated so the picture still shows the right way up.

Because the pixels themselves are turned, the file does not rely on a hidden turn flag that some programs ignore. That is the usual reason a picture looks right on a phone but sideways on a web page.

Choosing the file type and quality

Save as offers Same type, JPG, PNG or WebP. Keep Same type for the least surprise. Quality only matters for JPG and WebP, where a lower number gives a smaller file with more visible loss. PNG ignores it. A HEIC photo needs a change of type, since most web pages cannot show HEIC, so it is saved as a JPG when you leave the choice alone.

  • Turning a JPG by a quarter turn and saving as a JPG still re-encodes the picture once, so avoid saving it again and again.
  • Choose PNG when you need see-through corners.
  • Pick Remove them all for photos of people or places that you share online.

One more habit helps with batches. Turn a single test picture first, look at the preview at full size, and only then add the rest. A wrong angle applied to fifty files costs more time than checking one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a photo 90 degrees?

Drop the photo in, then press Turn left or Turn right. Download the result when the preview looks correct.

Can I rotate many pictures at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, set the turn once, and use Download all as ZIP. You can also turn a single picture on its own with the buttons under it.

Why do I get empty corners when I use another angle?

A tilted rectangle does not fit inside its old frame, so the canvas grows and leaves triangles in each corner. Fill them with white or black, leave them see-through in a PNG, or use the zoom option.

Does turning a picture make it blurrier?

A quarter or half turn moves pixels without blending, so it stays sharp. Other angles have to blend pixels, and saving as JPG or WebP also compresses again.

Will my location stay in the photo?

Only if you ask for it. The default is to remove all photo details, and there is a choice that keeps the camera and date but drops the place.

Are my pictures uploaded anywhere?

No. They are processed in your browser on your own computer.
