Meta Title and Description Checker, With Search Preview

Paste a title and a meta description to see the character count, an estimated pixel width and how the result may look on desktop and mobile, or check a whole list of pages and download the results. Google's own length guidance was read on 22 October 2026.

How the checker works

Paste a page title and a meta description. The tool counts the characters, measures an estimated width in pixels with the fonts search results commonly use, and draws a desktop and a mobile preview. If the text runs past the guide width, the preview cuts it off with an ellipsis so you can see what may be lost. You can add a brand name, a date, a favicon and a keyword to make the preview look like a real result, paste a page's HTML to fill the fields, or switch to Many pages to check a whole list at once and download the results as a CSV file.

What Google says about length

QuestionAnswer, per Google Search Central (read 22 October 2026)
Is there a maximum title length? No limit on the title element, though Google advises keeping titles concise. Title links are cut to fit the device width, and Google gives no character or pixel number
Can Google change my title?Yes. Google generates title links automatically and may replace a title that is missing a part, outdated, mismatched with the page or in the wrong language
Is there a maximum meta description length? No. The displayed snippet is cut to fit the device width, and Google gives no number
Does Google use my meta description?Sometimes. Snippets are mainly built from the page's own text, and the description is used when it describes the page better

The guide widths on this page

Because Google publishes no limit, the bars use widths that SEO tools commonly use as a guide: about 600 pixels for a title and about 920 pixels for a description on desktop, with a second preset of 580 and 960. Treat them as a rough line, not a rule, and change them if you prefer other numbers. Characters are shown too, but width is what decides where text is cut, since a row of narrow letters fits more than a row of wide ones. Emoji are drawn at their own width, so a title that uses them is less exactly measured.

Checking many pages at once

The Many pages tab takes one page per line in the form title | description, or a CSV file with the title in the first column and the description in the second. Each row shows its characters and its estimated width, and a width over the guide is underlined. The results download as a CSV file, so you can sort them in a spreadsheet. A browser cannot read other sites' pages directly, so the tool does not fetch live pages. Paste the title and description you already have, or paste a page's source into the One page tab.

Writing for the reader, not the counter

  • Put the main idea first, so it survives if the end is cut.
  • Write a title that matches what is on the page, since a mismatch is one reason Google may rewrite it.
  • Give every page its own title and description, so pages do not compete in results.
  • Describe the page in a plain sentence that a person would want to click.

When a whole site is being rebuilt, titles and descriptions are part of the work that protects search visibility. See our website redesign SEO checklist for the full list.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta title be?

Google sets no maximum and cuts titles to fit the device width. As a rough guide, many SEO tools use about 600 pixels, which is often around 55 to 60 characters, but the width of the letters decides.

How long should a meta description be?

Google says there is no maximum length. The visible snippet is cut to fit the device width, so put the important part first.

Why does Google show a different title from mine?

Google may rewrite a title that is missing a part, outdated, unlike the page content or in a different language. Matching the title to the page reduces the chance.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Google's snippet documentation covers how the description can be used for the snippet shown in results. Write it for the person reading the result, and make sure it describes the page.

Can I check a list of pages?

Yes. Use the Many pages tab with one title and description per line, or load a CSV file, then download the results.

Does it read my live page?

No. A browser cannot read other sites directly. Paste the title and description, or paste the page's HTML into the One page tab.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. The checker runs in your browser. Your last entries are saved only on your own device so they are here next time.
