Lorem Ipsum Generator With Exact Lengths and Ready-to-Paste Formats

Fill a layout with believable filler text in the length you need. Choose paragraphs, sentences, words or an exact number of characters, then copy it as plain text, HTML or a Markdown list.

Amount

The text is made in your browser, with no request to a server. Your settings are kept on your own device so the page opens as you left it.

Why layouts need filler of the right length

A card grid looks tidy with three-word titles and falls apart with a ten-word one. Filler that is too short hides problems, and filler that is too long creates problems that real copy will never have. This generator lets you set the length to match what the real content is likely to be, so a design review shows the layout behaving as it will.

Set the number, pick the unit, and press New text. A short keyboard shortcut makes another batch without leaving the keyboard, which is useful when you want to see how a section copes with several different lengths in a row.

Choosing the unit

UnitRange allowedUse it for
Paragraphs1 to 500Body copy and article layouts
Sentences1 to 500Intros, captions and summaries
Words1 to 10,000Headings, labels and buttons
Characters1 to 100,000Fields with a hard character limit

In characters mode the text is cut at exactly the number you ask for and never ends on a trailing space, so it is safe for testing a field limit. When you pick paragraphs, a second choice sets how long each one is: short, medium or long.

Starting the text

The Start with menu has three options. The classic paragraph begins with the well known first line that most designers recognise. The Lorem ipsum opening uses only the first few words and then random ones. Random words skips the familiar start altogether. Starting with the classic line is handy for a client review, since it signals at a glance that the text is a placeholder and not real copy.

Sentences vary in length, and some contain a comma, so blocks of text have the uneven rhythm of real writing instead of a wall of identical lines.

Output formats

  • Plain text, with a blank line between paragraphs.
  • HTML paragraphs, each wrapped in a paragraph tag, ready to paste into a template.
  • HTML list, with each item inside a list item.
  • Markdown list, one dash per item, for notes and documentation.

Copy puts the result on your clipboard, and Download saves it as a file.

Matching filler to real content

Before you pick a length, look at what the finished site will hold. A service page might have a headline of six to ten words, an intro of two sentences and three short cards. Make each piece of filler about that size. Use the words unit for headlines and buttons, the sentences unit for intros, and paragraphs for the body of an article.

It also pays to make one extra long and one extra short example of every block. If the card still looks right with a twenty-word title, a real editor will not be able to break it with a long one.

Handing filler to a developer

The HTML formats save a step when you are building a template by hand. Paste the paragraph output into a page and the structure is already in place. For a CMS collection, the plain text output is easier to paste into a rich text field. When you document a component, the Markdown list gives you a clean example to include in a style guide.

Mistakes with placeholder text

  • Shipping it. Search the final build for the placeholder opening before a launch, since filler left on a live page looks careless and can be indexed.
  • Testing only with one length. Try a very short and a very long version of each field.
  • Skipping real content. Filler cannot tell you whether a headline persuades. Our landing page structure guide explains why real copy should be in the design early.

Frequently asked questions

What is lorem ipsum?

It is scrambled, Latin-looking text used to fill a design so people judge the layout and not the words. It carries no meaning on purpose.

How do I get an exact number of characters?

Choose Characters from the unit list and type the number. The result is cut at that count and avoids ending on a space.

Can I get the text as HTML?

Yes. Choose HTML paragraphs or HTML list under Format, then copy the result.

Is there a limit on how much I can make?

Yes. The page allows up to 500 paragraphs or sentences, 10,000 words or 100,000 characters at a time.

Will the text be the same each time?

No. Apart from the chosen opening, the words are picked at random, so each run is different.

Does the tool send anything to a server?

No. The text is generated in your browser.

Is it all right to leave lorem ipsum on a live site?

It is better not to. Replace it before launch, as placeholder text gives visitors and search engines nothing useful.
