PNG to WebP: Lighter Graphics for a Faster Page

Change PNG screenshots and graphics into WebP files, one at a time or in batches. Choose lossless to keep every pixel, or a quality level for a smaller file, and see each size before and after.

Converting PNG to WebP is done by your browser, with no upload step. Your last settings are stored on this device only.

A speed audit pointed at your PNG files

PNG files are a common reason a page is heavy, especially full-width screenshots and large illustrations. A conversion to WebP is one of the cheapest fixes, because the picture stays the same and the file gets lighter.

Drop PNG pictures on the page, click to choose, or paste with Ctrl+V, or Command+V on a Mac. You can add one file, many, or a whole folder. Each one converts as soon as it arrives and shows its size before and after, so you can see exactly what was saved for every file.

Quality, lossless and size

SettingChoicesUse it for
QualityA sliderSmaller files when a little loss is fine
LosslessEvery pixel keptGraphics, text and logos that must stay exact
SizeFull size, or a longest side of 3840, 2560, 1920, 1280 or 800 pxMatching the picture to the space it fills

A change to any setting converts the whole list again. That makes it easy to compare lossless against a quality setting on your own pictures and keep whichever result gives the better trade.

Saving the results

  • Download WebP saves one picture.
  • Download all as ZIP saves the batch as one archive.
  • Save all to a folder writes the files straight into a folder you choose, in browsers that allow it.
  • Start over clears the list.

Keep your PNG originals, since a design that changes later is easier to update from the source file.

Where to take care

Not every picture gets smaller. A tiny PNG with a few flat colours can already be about as light as it will get, and the before and after sizes will tell you so. In that case, keep the PNG. Transparent logos deserve a quick check on both a light and a dark background after converting.

  • Open a few results at full size and look at text edges.
  • Check that your site builder or upload form accepts WebP.
  • Match the Size setting to the widest place the image is shown.

Swapping image formats is one item in a longer list of changes that make a site quicker. Our website optimization service takes on the full list.

Convert, or compress the PNG instead

If WebP is not accepted where you are uploading, a smaller PNG is the alternative. The Compress PNG tool on this site cuts the file size by reducing colours while keeping the PNG format. Use this converter when the destination takes WebP, and that one when it must stay a PNG.

Transparent graphics and logos

Many PNG files are logos or icons with see-through areas. After converting, put the WebP on a coloured background in a test page, and look at the edges. Soft shadows and thin outlines are where trouble shows first. If you see a halo, convert that one picture with the lossless option.

A workable routine for a whole site

  1. Collect the PNG files from the page or the media folder.
  2. Drop them all in, and set Size to the widest display width.
  3. Compare lossless and a quality level on one picture.
  4. Apply the better one to the batch and save a ZIP.
  5. Upload the WebP files and test the page on a phone.

Judging whether the swap was worth it

Look at three things on each result row: the size drop, the sharpness of text and the edges of transparent shapes. A saving of a few kilobytes on a file that is already small is not worth any visible change. A saving of half on a big banner usually is. Keep a note of the settings that worked for your kind of graphics, so the next batch goes faster.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to WebP?

Drop your PNG files on the page. They convert at once, and you can download each one, or all as a ZIP.

Should I use lossless or a quality level?

Use lossless when a graphic must stay exact. Use a quality level when a smaller file matters more than perfect pixels.

Can I convert many PNG files in one go?

Yes. Add many files or a folder, then save them as a ZIP or into a folder.

Will the WebP always be smaller?

Usually, but check the sizes shown for each file. If a PNG is already tiny, the gain may be small.

Can I resize while converting?

Yes. The Size menu limits the longest side to 3840, 2560, 1920, 1280 or 800 px.

Is my picture sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser, and the files stay on your computer.
