App Icon Generator: One Picture, Every Platform Folder

Give it one square picture, 1024 pixels or bigger, and it fills the folders a mobile or desktop project expects. Tick the platforms you ship to, check the previews at real sizes, and download a single ZIP.

Your picture is read and resized in your browser and is never uploaded. Only your platform ticks, padding and colour choices are remembered on your own device, not the picture.

For the moment a designer hands over the artwork

A designer finishes one big icon, and now a developer needs a pile of differently sized files, each in the right folder with the right name. Doing that by hand in an image editor is slow and easy to get wrong. This tool takes the single master picture and produces the whole set at once.

Drop a square PNG onto the page, or paste one. A square file at 1024 by 1024 or bigger is the best input. If the picture is smaller, the tool tells you the largest icons will be enlarged and may look soft. If it is not square, two choices appear: crop to a square from the centre, or fit the whole picture inside a square with empty space around it.

What goes into each folder

PlatformWhat the ZIP contains
iOS and iPadOSAn AppIcon.appiconset folder with every pixel size the slots need, plus the Contents.json that Xcode reads, so the folder can be dropped into an asset catalog
AndroidLauncher icons and round icons in the mdpi, hdpi, xhdpi, xxhdpi and xxxhdpi folders, a 512 pixel store icon, and with the adaptive option a foreground layer, the XML files and a background colour file
macOSAn appiconset with 16, 32, 128, 256 and 512 point sizes at 1x and 2x, plus its Contents.json
Web app and favicon16 and 32 pixel favicons, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon, 192 and 512 pixel icons, a maskable 512 icon and a manifest-icons.json snippet

The count of files is shown on the download button, so you can see what you are about to get as you tick and untick platforms.

The settings worth a second look

  • Padding goes from 0 to 25 percent and shrinks the artwork inside each icon. A little padding stops the shape from touching the edge once a system rounds the corners.
  • Fill and background colour covers see-through parts of your picture. The iOS files are always filled, because a store icon should not be see-through. Untick it for web or macOS icons that should keep transparency.
  • Adaptive icon splits the Android icon into a foreground picture placed inside the central safe area of a larger layer, with your background colour behind it.
  • Corners stay square on purpose. iOS, Android and macOS round them for you, so you should not bake rounded corners into the master.

Below the previews there is a strip showing the icon at the small sizes used in settings lists and notifications. If detail disappears there, simplify the artwork before shipping it.

Warnings the tool gives and what to do

  1. If your source has see-through parts and the iOS files are not filled, a notice appears. Turn the fill on and pick a colour that suits the artwork.
  2. If the source is under 1024 pixels on its short side, redraw the master at a larger size rather than relying on enlargement.
  3. If the saved store icon is larger than 1024 KB, the message after download points it out. Fewer colours or a simpler picture lowers the file size.

The ZIP is named after your file, with app-icons added to the end, so several projects do not overwrite each other in your downloads folder.

After the icons are made

An icon is one piece of a launch. The store listing, the landing page and the screenshots all have to agree with it. If you need a site that presents an app well, our web design and UI/UX page shows how we plan that work from the content outward. For the browser-tab icon of that site, the favicon generator on this site makes a smaller set for web use.

Frequently asked questions

What size should my master icon be?

Use a square picture of 1024 by 1024 pixels or larger. The tool reads the size and warns you when the largest icons would have to be enlarged.

Should I add rounded corners myself?

No. Leave the corners square. iOS, Android and macOS apply their own rounding, and baking it in can leave odd edges.

What is the adaptive icon option?

It makes an Android foreground layer and the XML and colour files that go with it. The system can then mask and move the layers in its own style.

Can I drop the iOS folder into Xcode?

The iOS folder is an appiconset with a Contents.json, which is the format an Xcode asset catalog reads. Copy it into the catalog and check the slots fill.

Why does the iOS icon have a solid background?

A see-through icon becomes a black square on a device, so the iOS files are filled with your chosen colour. Web and macOS icons can stay transparent if you untick the fill.

Is my artwork uploaded?

No. Every size is made in your browser, and only your settings are remembered on your device.
