Every list of Webflow agency red flags says "check the portfolio". None we read says how. A screenshot proves nothing, and a live link proves little unless you know what to look at. This guide gives the red flags and, for each one, a check you can run yourself in a browser, with what we saw when we ran the same checks on three agency sites on 25 October 2026.
data-wf-domain, data-wf-page and data-wf-site on the opening html tag and loaded files from cdn.prod.website-files.com. Two sites not built in Webflow (amariq.com and WP Creative) had neither. Before you hire a Webflow studio, pick two portfolio sites and spend ten minutes on each. Open them on your phone. View the page source and look for the Webflow markers. Run the page through PageSpeed Insights and compare with Google's pass marks. Look at how the class names are written. Then ask who owns the Workspace and the Site plan for your site. Anything the studio cannot show or explain is your answer.
Disclosure: we are a web design studio that builds on Webflow and we compete for the same work as the studios named here, so use these checks on any studio, us included.
On 25 October 2026 we searched Google (United States, English) for "red flags when hiring a webflow agency". The results included Flow Ninja (dated 30 September 2025 on the page), Ander Agency (24 September 2026), Flowout, Curio Digital, Blushush, Tuesday, HyberX and a LinkedIn post. We read two in full: Ander Agency's and Flow Ninja's. The HyberX page returned a 404 for us, so we have not summarised it.
Ander Agency lists eight signs: who actually designs and builds, whether the portfolio is real Webflow work or a template with a new logo, a price quoted before any questions, whether they talk about the CMS or only looks, what they say about SEO and migration, who is in charge of the site after the project, whether they tell you when Webflow is not the right tool, and whether you can speak to past clients. Flow Ninja lists ten, including a vague process, screenshot-only portfolios, template reliance, dismissing performance with "Webflow handles that by default", unclear ownership and promises of unlimited revisions or guaranteed rankings.
Both are sensible. The gap is the same in each: neither explains how to verify anything on a live site beyond opening it on a phone, and neither mentions viewing the source or using a speed test. That is what this guide adds.
Tap the menu. Scroll the long pages. Open a collection page such as a blog post or a case study. Look for a menu that breaks, text that touches the edge or images that jump as they load. This catches the worst problems with no tools.
Do not submit forms on a studio's client sites. You would be sending a message to a stranger, and it tells you little. Ask the studio what happens after a form is sent instead.
In a desktop browser, right-click the page and choose View Page Source (or press Ctrl+U on Windows or Option+Command+U on a Mac). Search for data-wf-. On a Webflow site the opening html tag carries attributes with the published domain, the page ID and the site ID. Here is the tag from Flowout's home page on 25 October 2026:
On the same day, Flow Ninja's and Digidop's home pages carried the same three attributes, and hundreds of file links on cdn.prod.website-files.com (312, 369 and 477 on Flow Ninja, Flowout and Digidop respectively). Amariq's own home page, which is hand-coded, and WP Creative's home page had neither.
What it tells you: that the portfolio piece really is published from Webflow, and on which domain. What it does not tell you: who built it. Webflow's pricing page says the free Starter plan comes with a webflow.io domain, so a portfolio link that ends in .webflow.io is a site that is not published on the client's own domain. Ask whether it ever launched.
Stay in the source and search for class=". Webflow publishes the class names the designer chose. Names like padding-global and container-large follow a recognisable naming system (we saw padding-global 13 times on Digidop's home page and 6 on Flowout's, and Amariq's hand-coded site uses the same pattern). A page full of names like div-block-27 or text-block-4 would suggest nobody named anything, which makes the site harder to hand over. Across the three agency home pages above we counted none of the div-block- style, which is what you would hope to see from studios selling to others.
A consistent naming system is not a guarantee of quality. It is a cheap signal that someone planned the build.
Paste the portfolio URL into PageSpeed Insights. Compare the results with the thresholds in Google's web.dev guide to Core Web Vitals (the page was last updated on 31 October 2024): Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, at the 75th percentile of page loads, across mobile and desktop.
A single run is a snapshot, and sites with little traffic may have no field data. If a studio says "Webflow handles that by default", this is the check that answers it: ask them to show you the numbers for the sites they cite.
Still in the source, check three things near the top. There is a that describes the page, a rel="canonical" link, and no robots meta tag that tells search engines to keep the page out of results. That kind of tag on a live site is a common leftover from a staging build. On 25 October 2026, none of the three agency home pages had one.
This is the check you cannot make from outside, so ask. Whose Workspace holds the site, who pays for the Site plan, and who can change the domain? Webflow's own update page says Workspace admins and owners can transfer a Site plan from one site to another, carrying over the billing schedule, site and domain settings and the payment method, and that the old site is then downgraded to the free Starter plan with its custom domain removed (launched 14 September 2023). Webflow's guidance on moving a live site between Workspaces has changed over time and some forum posts still say an active plan must be downgraded first, so confirm the steps with Webflow before you rely on any studio's promise.
What matters is the answer you get and that it is in writing: where the site will live on launch day, and what the handover steps are.
| Red flag | Why it matters | The check |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio is screenshots only | You cannot test what you cannot open | Ask for live links and run steps 1 to 5 |
Portfolio links end in .webflow.io | The work may never have launched on a client domain | Ask which sites are live on the client's own domain |
| Price before any questions | Suggests a generic package | Count the questions asked about goals, content and measurement |
| "Webflow handles speed by default" | Speed depends on images, scripts and animation | Run step 4 on two of their sites |
Class names like div-block-27 | Harder to edit and hand over | Step 3 |
| A robots tag in the head that hides a live page from search | Search engines are told to skip the page | Step 5 |
| Agency keeps the Workspace or Site plan in its own name | You may not be able to move or control the site | Step 6, in writing |
| Guaranteed rankings or unlimited revisions | No studio controls rankings | Ask what happens when the revisions run out |
| Cannot name who builds your site | The person you meet may not be the one who works on it | Ask for the builder's name and a past site they built |
| No references | You cannot hear what working with them is like | Ask for two past clients you can contact |
Our guide to choosing a web design agency turns the wider questions into a scorecard, and hiring an offshore web design agency safely covers the extra checks when the team is in another country.
A studio that is comfortable being checked will say things like these:
For a sense of what published numbers look like, see how much a Webflow website costs and Webflow agencies under $15,000.
We price each project from its scope and not by the hour. Payment is in three parts: 40% to start, 30% when the design is approved and 30% before launch. When the last payment is made, the design, copy and code are yours, and the domain, hosting and analytics accounts are held in your name. See our Webflow development service.
View the page source and search for data-wf-. On 25 October 2026 the home pages of Flow Ninja, Flowout and Digidop each carried data-wf-domain, data-wf-page and data-wf-site on the html tag. Files also load from cdn.prod.website-files.com. A site exported from Webflow and hosted elsewhere may not show them.
It is a question to ask, not proof of anything. Webflow runs a partner directory, and the guides we read suggest checking it. We could not read the directory pages reliably, so check the studio's listing yourself and ask what the tier means.
Not by itself. It means the site is on Webflow's free domain, not the client's own. Ask whether the project launched, and look for a live version on the client's domain.
Ask whose Workspace the site is in, who pays for the Site plan and how the handover works. Webflow says admins and owners can transfer a Site plan between sites. Ask the studio to write down the steps before you pay.
Not on its own. Speed depends on images, scripts, fonts and animation. Test the studio's portfolio sites in PageSpeed Insights and compare with Google's published pass marks.
Two is enough to see a pattern. Pick one recent and one older, so you can see whether the work holds up over time.
You do not need to understand every name. Look for readable, consistent names and avoid pages full of names like div-block-27. If your own team will edit the site, ask the studio for a short naming guide.
