Bar Graph Maker With Grouped, Stacked and Line Views

Type or paste a label and one or more numbers on each line, and the graph is drawn as you go. One column makes a simple bar graph. More columns make groups of bars, stacked bars or lines, and a header row names each series.

Paste columns straight from a spreadsheet, drop a CSV file on the box, or type Label, 42. More numbers on a line make more series, and a first row like Month, 2024, 2025 names them.

The graph is drawn in your browser and your numbers are never uploaded. Your last data and settings stay on your own device for next time.

From a few rows to a finished graph

Say you have six months of sales and want to show them in a monthly report. Paste the month names and totals into the data box, give the graph a title, and the bars appear at once. The starting example in the box shows the pattern: a label, a separator and a number on every line.

The separator can be a comma, a semicolon, a tab or a colon, so a block copied from a spreadsheet works as it is. You can open a CSV file or drop one on the box instead. Numbers may carry a currency sign, a percent sign or thousands commas, and those are stripped before drawing.

Adding a second and third series

Put more numbers on a line and each extra column becomes its own series. A first line such as Month, 2024, 2025 names them, and the names appear in a legend under the title. The header is recognised when its first cell is empty, says something like month, year or category, or when none of the other cells are numbers.

The stack box appears only when there is more than one series, and it does not apply to the line view.

Choices that change what the reader sees

  • The axis starts at zero. Bars are drawn from a zero baseline, so their lengths stay in proportion to the values. Negative numbers hang below the line.
  • Biggest first sorts the categories by their total, which helps when the order of the labels carries no meaning.
  • Show the values prints the number on each bar. For stacked bars it prints the total at the end.
  • One colour for every bar keeps a single series calm. Turn it off and each bar gets its own colour from the palette.
  • Across and up titles name the two axes, such as Month and Sales.
  • Before and after numbers add a unit like $ or % to axis marks and values.

Axis steps are chosen automatically, in sizes such as 1, 2 or 5 times a power of ten, so the grid lines land on round numbers.

Common mistakes with bar graphs

Most confusing graphs come from small decisions made late. Check these before you save.

  • Using a line for categories that have no order, such as products. Lines suggest a path between points.
  • Stacking series that should be compared. In a stack only the bottom series shares a baseline, so the others are hard to read.
  • Leaving long labels on a vertical graph. Use bars across instead. Labels on vertical bars that do not fit are tilted, and very long ones are shortened with an ellipsis.
  • Mixing units in one column, such as dollars in one row and counts in the next.

A short, plain title that says what the numbers are and for which period does more for a reader than any colour choice.

Saving it for a report or a page

Save PNG makes a picture, SVG keeps the shapes sharp at any size, and PDF gives a printable page. Copy picture places the graph on the clipboard to paste into a slide, and CSV saves your data back as a file. The background can be white, dark or see-through. If you track monthly numbers for a site and want them acted on, our website optimization and conversion improvements page shows how we turn such figures into changes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a bar graph from pasted data?

Paste a label and a number on each line into the data box. The graph is drawn as soon as the text is valid.

How do I show two years side by side?

Put two number columns on each line and start with a header line such as Month, 2024, 2025. The bars are grouped for each month and the legend names the years.

Can I turn the graph into a line graph?

Yes. Choose Line graph in the Style menu. Each series becomes a line with a dot on every value.

What does stacking do?

It places the series on top of each other in one bar, so the bar shows the total and how it splits. The option appears when you have more than one series.

Can I add a unit to the numbers?

Type a symbol such as $ in Before numbers, or % in After numbers. It appears on the axis and on the bar values.

Which format is best for a website?

SVG stays sharp at all sizes and is small. PNG is the safer choice for tools that do not take SVG files.
